Preparing for move-in

Move-in day is an exciting time and by preparing yourself and your items ahead of time you can ensure that your experience is as smooth as possible.

Label all of your items with your first and last name

This is helpful to our volunteers when they are helping you move your items to your room.

Arrive between your designated move-in time

Just before move in day you will receive an email letting you know your designated move in time. By showing up during this time, you ensure that all the move in services will be available to you.

Make a plan for guests

During the first week of housing we do not allow guests in the building. This means that anyone helping you to move in will need to find alternative arrangements if they need to stay overnight in Kamloops.

What to bring

  • Bed linens and pillow
  • Bathroom supplies
  • Soft light desk lamp
  • Storage bins
  • Cooking supplies (pots, pans, cutlery, plates, bowls, cups, can opener, etc.)
  • Small TV
  • Hangers
  • Laundry detergents and fabric softener
  • Extension cord / power bar
  • Alarm clock
  • Cleaning supplies

Note: Please do not over pack.

What not to bring

  • Animals/pets
  • Weapons: hunting knives, swords, firearms
  • Hot plates and deep fryers or appliances with open elements
  • Candles and incense
  • Kegs of beer, beer bottles, single serving glass containers
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Hooks or nails that will be placed in the wall
  • Refrigerators or freezers (including mini fridges)
  • Additional furniture such as dressers or shelving

Absolutely nothing is to be pinned, taped, screwed, nailed, or stapled into any wall or furnishing within your housing room. Hot plates and open heat sources are not permitted. Only CSA approved electrical appliances with automatic shut off feature are allowed in the Housing (such as kettles, toaster ovens, irons...). Only refrigerators and freezers provided by the Housing will be allowed in the suites.

Early move-in

Transitioning to life away from home is a challenge for every student and we're here to help make that easier. To enhance your experience at NVIT, we strongly encourage you to take part in our early move-in program to make the most of your year, to set yourself up for success and to get a jump start to life at NVIT.
The early move-in program fosters a great community through three days of events and programs. This includes academic support programs as well as many social events and activities to allow our students to get acquainted with their new home and start developing friendships. All of our early move-in activities are designed to familiarize yourself with the campus as well as the things you may encounter throughout your academic year.

Move-In day

Move-in day is one of the days we look forward to most at NVIT Housing. We will send out information so you know how to enter campus and when to arrive. If you’ve acknowledged our communication and have prepared yourself well, this day will be a breeze.

Once you arrive you will be given your room number and our friendly volunteers will help you move your belongings into your new home. We don’t send this information out ahead of time as things could possible change right up until your arrival.

It’s as easy as that. What next? Make sure you check in with the front desk or your Housing advisor so you know which event to go to next.

Parent/guardian info session

During move-in day we host a brief parent info session which helps to provide some here-and-now context for the year their student is about to have. It is our hope that this information as well as the opportunity to ask questions allows parents and guardians to do what they do best for their student.


When you move into the building you will receive an inspection form that you can use to document the state of your room when you arrived. If there are a few scratches on your desk or a few pinholes in the wall, this is where you want to write that down. We will collect these from all students and at the end of the year we will do another inspection to look for any discrepancies. If there are any chargeable items these will be paid out of your security deposit. The goal of using inspections is to hold students accountable to maintaining their room in great condition so that others may enjoy it in the future.

Winter Break Closure

At the end of the first term comes the first examination period of the year followed by our winter break closure. This is an important time for all students as they study relentlessly to try to ace those exams. That is why we have our students leave the housing on the earlier of: 24 hours after their last exam or 11 a.m. on the day after the examination period ends. You will be re-granted access to your room the weekend before classes start.
It’s important to note that you do not need to move out of your room, but there is a winter break checklist that we need students to follow so that you don’t come back to rotting food or a power-surged laptop. This can be found posted in the housing prior to exams or, as always, you can ask the front desk.

Cancellation & Withdrawals

Cancellations occur prior to move-in. Withdrawals occur after move-in. Cancellations and withdrawals will not be accepted over the phone. If you decide to cancel your Student Housing application you must submit a Cancellation/Withdrawal Request Form via in-person, email, fax, or by mail.

Preparing for move-out

Similar to the winter break closure, to respect the studying that occurs during the examination period, we do ask students to move out of their suites on the earlier of: 24 hours after their last exam or 11 a.m. on the day after the examination period ends.

We realize that this is not a lot of time so it is our experience that it is always best to get ahead in your preparation for move-out. If you remember all the preparation that was needed to move in, you’ll appreciate the planning that will need to go into moving out. We will post a move-out checklist early enough so that you can do just that. It is possible to move out later than the above noted timelines; however, if this is the case, you will be subject to Late move-out fees.

Extending your stay

If you wish to extend your stay into the summer we will need you to create an application for the summer semester. During the summer semester, the housing is open to the general public for accommodation. Therefore it is our procedure that we require all students to live on designated floors. This means that if you are living on another floor at the end of the winter semester, you will need to move to a new room for the summer semester. Thankfully, we find that students enjoy keeping the summer community alive by being close to fellow students.
